Despite having Asian Keirin Champion in Rizal Tisin and Azizul Hasni Awang plus four riders qualified for the last Beijing Olympics, you might think the Malaysian cycling is improving but not coming from former national riders, Datuk Malek Maidin, Fairoz Izni Abdul Ghani and Hardi Razali
The three of them concerned at the local state of cycling, they with the help of friends launched Keirin Open. They are concern that Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) and National Sports Council (NSC) will struggle with youth development and there’s a lack of local track race for the seniors
They cited the last local race was back in 2005 and that held as it was just for the sake preparing the cyclists for the SEA Games. The riders also claimed they were turned down by the association for a training program during Ramadhan
That was the last straw and the trio created Keirin Open. Instead of renting the velodrome to train, they concocted the idea to hold monthly races and it was successfully held last 13th September
Well done!
