THE enthusiast-backed Keirin Open series is set to enter its second season with Round One at the Kuala Lumpur Velodrome this weekend.
Scheduled for Saturday night, the event organised by a group of cycling enthusiasts led by national back-up coach Fairoz Izni Abdul Ghani, is now also backed by the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF).

Fairoz said the aim is still mainly to provide regular competition for track riders, while providing newcomers the opportunity to try out track cycling.

"Right now, we are slowly gaining momentum. The MNCF and the National Sports Council (NSC) are also showing more interest in supporting these sorts of events," said Fairoz.

"We're not aiming to do something really big which requires a big budget. This is just something to fill the void of not having enough track events for the senior riders in the country.
"We're just going to keep it simple."

The keirin is the highlight of the event, with World No 1 Azizul Hasni Awang and 1km time trial Asian record holder Rizal Tisin among the star-studded cast.

A snowball race that provides cash prizes for leaders at the end of every lap, along with a scratch race and points race, will be held as side events.

Unlike other business-based events, the Keirin Open is funded mainly through contributions from cycling enthusiasts and well wishers.

Two rounds of the event were held last year and this year, pending confirmation of support from the NSC and MNCF, the organisers are planning an event each month.

P/s: Ada sedikit perubahan, Keirin Open akan di mulakan pada jam 9 pagi Sabtu - 9hb Mei 2009.

Sekian, Terima Kasih.
