NATIONAL head coach John Beasley looks forward to a smooth ride for his plans as more active back-up squad riders join in apart from a refreshing new structure to the national track cycling set-up

World Championships 200m sprint silver medallist Azizul Hasni Awang leads a squad that return to their training base in Melbourne on Wednesday.

Beasley will table the new structure at a track committee meeting tomorrow that also brings a premature retirement for 25-year-old Harnizam Basri, who will join the Australian as assistant coach in Melbourne.

At home, back-up coach Fairoz Izni Abdul Ghani will have his hands full with more charges under him being given more important assignments, beginning with the Asia Cup in Japan in two weeks' time.

World Championships 1km time trial bronze medallist Rizal Tisin will remain under Fairoz's care until he returns to Melbourne in October to prepare for the UCI World Cup.

Beasley, who has full faith in the training arrangements in Kuala Lumpur, said: "Rizal has shown that he can maintain his form by training here and all we'll have to do is whack him with intensity when he gets back to Melbourne."

Beasley was on hand to assist in the opening round of the Keirin Open, organised by Fairoz at the Kuala Lumpur Velodrome yesterday.

The keirin was won by Hafiz Sufian, ahead of Harrif Salleh. Azizul triumphed in the Beasley Cycling scratch race while the AIJC snowball title went to Amir Mustafa Rusli. Hafiz and Harrif are also in the squad that will train in Melbourne.

Beasley said while the elite squad will focus on world class events, the back-up riders will be given more opportunities in the new season and they will feature prominently in plans for two rounds of the Asia Cup and meets of that level.
