New roll for cycling great

AS much as John Beasley snr exudes the iconic Australian spirit, he will have a quiet cheer for Malaysia's cycling team as they strive to take home a medal in the Beijing Olympics.

Beasley's son, John Beasley jnr, has coached the Malaysian cycling team for the past two years, molding it into a gold medal chance for the keirin event.

Beasley snr said his son had worked hard to transform a bunch of "ordinary bike riders" into Olympic medal contenders.

"When the boys came to him, they were just very ordinary bike riders," he said. "They had no experience of racing outside their country and John has got them and trained them out at the Northcote track which is a closed-in velodrome and got them all fit through miles and miles of roadwork. Now he's got them, his two sprinters can do 200 meters in just a tick over 10 seconds."

He believes the Malaysians are destined for a medal but will still holds out hope the Aussies come through with the gold.

"They're right up there now with the best of them. Now it all depends on how they cope with their nerves and whether they can produce it or not but they're as fit as he can get them. We have our fingers crossed."

The Beasley family is overloaded with Olympic experience, with Beasley snr having worked as a mechanic at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

The 78yearold, who was one of four cyclists chosen to represent Australia at the Tour De France in 1952, was also the mechanic for six Olympic cyclists at the Games.

"It was a tremendous experience with the opening ceremony and everything. We marched in the opening ceremony. The feeling you got when you walked into the arena was out of this world."

Beasley admitted the job as a mechanic for cyclists had become much easier over the years.

"It's definitely a lot easier the way the bikes are made now."

Ag2r sole candidate for 20th ProTour licence

"AG2r team boss John Beasley was very satisfied with his team's result. "Simon was keen to give some young Australians the opportunity to join the French boys we had coming out and the result has just been fantastic," Beasley said. One of the Aussies joining the French Continental team in Australia was Mitch Docker, and he was proud to be given the opportunity to do so. "I was rapt to be able to ride in this team and support Simon," Docker said, who finished at two minutes off his teammate Gerrans on final general classification. "I must admit I was surprised to finish so high up in a race of this class."
