Chiang Mai Training Camp For Cyclists

By SHAMSHUL FITRI

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian road cyclists will set up a month-long training camp in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from tomorrow to gear up for their hunt for gold medals in the Indonesia SEA Games in November.

The camp in Chiang Mai, which will end on Aug 28, marks the full swing of preparations lined up by coach Graham Seers before the team take part in several races in Australia in September.

The riders heading for the training camp are Mohd Shahrul Mat Amin, Mohd Saufi Mat Senan (Terengganu Pro-Asia); Mohd Adiq Husainie Othman, Amir Mustafa Rusli (Drapac); Ng Yong Li (Le Tua); and Mohd Rauf Nur Misbah and Akmal Amrun (national team).

Meanwhile, the women riders bound for Chiangmai are newly-crowned national champion Kimbeley Yap, Mariana Mohamad, Masziyaton Mohd Radzi, Mardiana Mohd Radzi and Ju Pha Somnet.

Shahrul, who won the national meet in Raub last month, said the terrain in Chiang Mai is quite similar to the one that will be used for the SEA Games in Indonesia.

“From the list of the preliminary riders who got selected, it looks like all of them have very good climbing ability,” said Shahrul.

“From what we have learned from our reconnaissance trip to Indonesia earlier this month, there will be a great deal of climbs in store.”

The squad scouted several sections of Bandung, where the road race is expected to be held.
Malaysia last won the gold medal in road cycling through Suhardi Hassan and Noor Azian Alias in the 2005 edition in Manila.

In addition to the road race, the Indonesia Games will also feature the individual and time trials.

“There is no better way than to go to the mountains if you want to win a tough race. I know that the training camp starts the same day as the fasting month ... but that won’t stop me from giving my best in training,” said Shahrul.

“We met with the Indonesian national team who were camped in the high areas in Bandung and that is a clear indication that they too are preparing for a hilly ride.”

Pusat perniagaan diwujud sekitar Kompleks Sukan Negara: Shabery

Hafiz takes different road in Chiangmai

THERE will be a new beginning for Hafiz Sufian after he was dropped from the chase for a place in the elite track cycling squad under the Road to London programme.

The 25-year-old leaves for Chiangmai next week as part of the national road squad under coach Graham Seers.

Hafiz will be looking to re-establish himself in road cycling after more than seven years as a track sprinter. It will be a daunting task, but one that the Selangor rider is ready to take on.

"The management had a meeting on Thursday to discuss our Sea Games medal prospects and I'm initially with the team that are headed to Chiangmai for a month of training," said Hafiz.

"There have been suggestions for me to go back to track events momentarily for the Sea Games, to compete in the omnium. But that hasn't been confirmed.

"Whatever it is, it looks like I'll have to shift towards road cycling. After having focused on track events for so long, it is going to be hard to get myself up to producing results. It will take time, but I'm ready to put in hardwork."

Hafiz and Rizal Tisin's departure from the Road to London programme has trimmed the prospects for next year's Olympic Games.

Keirin World No 1 Azizul Hasni Awang and Fatehah Mustapa are the ones most likely to qualify.

The National Sports Council and Malaysian National Cycling Federation also hope veteran Josiah Ng and Adiq Husainie Othman will step into the picture. -- ARNAZ M. KHAIRUL

Suka-suka Jadi Sukarela

“…Kita mesti bersemangat Ok! Kita mesti menang pingat Emas! Kita akan bantu awak semua..dapatkan kerja, elaun.. Kayuh kuat-kuat!, Good luck everyone! - kata-kata sukarela

Lagi best of the year sukarela pun tak kenal atlet mereka. Turun padang jauh sekali. Lagi kesian. Kita mesti Semangat! Semangat macam wonder pat!

Malaysian keirin ace Tisin now fixed on BMX

Rizal Tisin in full flight.
National team failed to qualify a number of riders for the London Olympic Games

Despite having one of the strongest track sprint squads in the Asia-Pacific, Malaysia look set to qualify only one male track rider for the 2012 London Olympics; current World Cup Keirin Champion Azizul Hasni Awang.

The London Games had been a long-term goal for the highly decorated Melbourne-based Malaysian national team directed by John Beasley, but things have not quite gone to plan recently, and that’s caused a major career re-think by some team members.

With hopes of Olympic start slots evaporating current Asian Keirin Champion Rizal Tisin has 'temporarily' ditched his track program and returned to the BMX track, where he started his cycling career as a teenager.

The 26-year-old had claimed World Championship medals (bronze in the 2009 1km TT), a World Cup win (Beijing 2008-9 1km), Commonwealth Games medals (silver in the 1km and bronze in the team sprint in India 2010) as well as numerous Asian and Southeast Asian Games championship medals in recent years.

But most of Tisin’s hopes were pinned on selection for the 2012 Olympics, which now look to be a non-starter for him, so he has switched his focus to BMX and the hope of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Earlier this year Tisin took the Asian Championship kierin title and a bronze medal in the team sprint before turning his attentions fully to the BMX track, where he’s hoping to stir up enthusiasm within Malaysia, where the discipline is currently down on a fairly small scale and is heavily under-funded.

He has already been in action in rounds of the national BMX series, and has stuck his neck out and with a part self funded project targeted at a medal in the SEA Games (Southeast Asian Games), which take place in Indonesia during November.

Should he, or other team members, come back with medals then it could well gain vital recognition for BMX in Malaysia.

Malaysian co-deal for Garmin-Cervélo?

Terengganu to link with Chipotle Development Team

For several years now Malaysia has been clearly intent on using cycling as a marketing and status-building tool, and with great success too.

The sport has gone from strength to strength over the past decade or so; not only in Malaysia, but also in the entire Southeast Asian region, largely thanks to the efforts of the Malaysian government in their continued support to the annual Tour de Langkawi.

The race has been instrumental in lifting cycling to a whole new level in the region, particularly where racing is concerned, as well as helping to raise the profile of Langkawi island, aiding in its quest to become a major player in the tourism market.

In recent years the government and its sub-divisions have also invested heavily in backing Malaysian cycling at grass roots level, and have achieved great success internationally on the track, and have a slowly but steadily evolving road racing scene, too. This investment has not only helped Malaysian athletes, it's also helped boost the credibility of the nation in sporting and organisational arenas.

On a worldwide scale the Tour de Langkawi may have lost a little of its lustre in recent years due to the emergence of other major "off season" events around the world; but in Malaysia it's easily as popular as ever, and ranks in popularity just behind events such as the Malaysian F1 GP and Moto GP, so still draws a strong field and pulls in an avid following.

One particular state of Malaysia, Terengganu, has gone cycling crazy over the past two to three years, and has also produced the lions share of the countries top cyclists, and has more recently backed the Terengganu Pro-Asia Continental team.

The Terengganu state government have become heavily involved with the development of cycling, and are already in the on the way to constructing a velodrome to help aspiring riders to follow in the footsteps of the state, and national hero, track sprinter Azizul Hasni Awang, and have also lured the Tour de Langkawi to finish in Terengganu in 2012, the first time the race has ever ended outside of the capital city of Kuala Lumpur.

An even more ambitious venture was announced (in principal) in the New Straits Times (a leading national daily newspaper) a few days ago. It would seem that Garmin-Cervélo DS Chan McRae's visit to KL for the recent launch of the Tour de Langkawi was about more than just committing his team to talk part in the race next year.

The NST report clearly details a proposal amounting to some RM2.7 million having been put to the TDL organisers by Slipstream Sports, and says that the tie in is being very seriously considered and negotiated. The link will likely also involve funding from the Malaysian Sports Ministry and the Terengganu state government.

The idea is to create a link between the state cycling infrastructure and the Chipotle Development Team. The proposed deal could see three Terengganu riders spend part of next season with the team, and also the addition of a logo/branding (exact details to be negotiated) appearing on next year's Garmin-Cervélo/Slipstream jerseys
